At your age ,you’ll wake from a nap in which you dreamt the worst. You’ll reach into your deepest fears and pull out a reminder of all that you’re not, all that you are yet to do, all that you may never be. You’ll think back to when you were younger . But even in the uncertainty of today , you’ll know that you were better than that then, and you’re even better than that now .
But it will sting. It will all sting, the night will hurt, the tea will feel too heavy to swallow and you’ll breakdown. You’ll lock your self in the bathroom , go to the shower, sit there for an hour and you’ll cry. Then, you’ll remember that today is the youngest you’ll ever be and the wisest you’ve ever been. You’ll pick yourself up and fold into a vulnerable kneel. You’ll pray and ask for strength and ask why things happen the way they do. There will be no answer after you say amen.
So , you’ll get up , give your not so hot tea a stir and you’ll drink it. You’ll call a friend , then get an uber to that same friend and you’ll laugh through it all. They will remind you of how much magic is in your voice , how much beauty God has given you , how much strength you embody and how fun this whole journey is . And you’ll believe her , you’ll believe her because at your age , you know truth from tale, love from hate , God from man. You’ll go to bed determined to slay the next day and you will do just that. Without a doubt , you always do.
