Some of you already know I love reading . I think it’s an important aspect of growth . You cannot be everywhere and experience everything but you can certainly read about everything . That is key to understanding how the world works. How people outside your culture , outside your sexuality ,outside your reach work. Below are 7 beginner friendly books you should read. All of which I’ve personally read and thoroughly enjoyed .
1. The alchemist
I reckon everyone should read this book at least once in their life . Definitely one of Paulo Coelho’s best in my opinion . It’s not very long, but every sentence every phrase every part of the boy’s journey is so well told that it feels like each page carries 5 more within it.
One of the few writers whose work I understand completely and can even place myself entirely in. The thing is, sometimes you read books and the women or the people in there , you can’t quite relate to. From their eye colour to their very interactions with the world . But Chimamanda does very well in telling our stories as Africans and as black women.
3. A thousand splendid suns
Heartbreaking. I had to take breaks from reading it because I’d get too emotional about how the story was going . It describes a life so tragic , so unfair with elements of utter beauty and bravery and strength. It’s a book for the lovers of love, the heart broken , for the justice seeking and the curious hearted .
4. By the river Piedra I sat down and wept
I read this book when ‘Love’ the romantic kind, was a tale to me. And this book helped me get closer to believing in its existence and that bit closer to not fearing it.
5. To kill a mocking bird
Read it. You most certainly won’t regret it.
6. The Great Gatsby
This will teach you a few things , more importantly that the past should be left in the past . Otherwise it cripples you and prevents you from truly living . Things are as they are . A life of ‘what ifs’ and ‘what should’ve beens’ isn’t a life at all.
7. How to be Parisian wherever you are
Funny, feminine , romantic , encouraging , stylish , sensual. This was a very light read that coincided perfectly with my Paris and south of France vacation . Even has French recipes in there that I helped myself to .
I hope this helps! Please read. I cannot stress how important reading is . One of my favourite quotes which is by John Waters says ‘ collect books even if you don’t plan on reading them right away. Nothing is more important than an unread library.’
